Billy Dec will launch Sunda New Asian on March 10 at 33 W. Columbia Street. The restaurant marks the fifth location for this pan-Asian chain, joining established sites in Chicago, Nashville, and Tampa.
Columbia Street's pedestrian plaza will house the restaurant. Comerica Park and Little Caesars Arena sit nearby. Culinary Director Mike Morales hails from Pampanga, while Head Sushi Chef Ise Matsunobu comes from Tokyo. Together, they crafted the menu.
Diners can expect pan-Asian fare spanning Japan, China, and Southeast Asian nations. Spicy tuna crispy rice, oxtail potstickers, baked crab handrolls, and Japanese wagyu tomahawk steak all make an appearance.
Dim sum and miso glazed sea bass round out selections. Noodle bowls and rice plates also feature on the menu, plus a dedicated sushi bar. Seafood, pork, beef and poultry provide protein choices.
"Detroit has incredible creative momentum and pride that's impossible to not fall in love with - we're honored to be joining the positive energy and movement," Dec said in a statement according to WXYZ. "We're bringing an incredibly meaningful experience rooted in Southeast Asian culture, connection, and culinary innovation."
Michigan guests have traveled to the Chicago site for years, Dec noted. Now his team gets to serve them closer to home.
"We see Detroit not only as a city on the rise but as a place ready to set the tone nationally," Dec added. "We're proud to grow with it, contribute to it, and be inspired by it."
Craft cocktails will shift with the seasons. Premium sake waits behind the bar, along with Asian beers, Japanese whiskies, and wine selections.
